Culture and Ideas
Culture is a complex of ideas, symbols, thoughts and actions. Knowledge of the present and the past, of ways of thinking and of administration explain how people create culture and are influenced by culture. The programme provides the opportunities to better understand this complexity.
The master’s programme in Culture and Ideas offers specializations in the academic study of culture and ideas within the humanities. Four of the programme options are within the subjects:
- history of ideas
- cultural history
- history of religion
- theatre studies.
We also offer a cross-disciplinary programme option taught in English in “Culture, Environment and Sustainability” in cooperation with the Centre for Development and the Environment .
In addition to the writing of a master’s thesis the study consists of theoretical and methodological coursework. Some of the courses are mandatory, while others are electives. The intention with the coursework is for you to acquire the necessary skills to be able to write an independent master’s thesis within your chosen specialization.
The competence you acquire is relevant for many sectors in society; for dissemination and administration of culture, for work in the media, for the writing of background material for decision-makers, for work in creative professions and for teaching.
The programme has various possibilities for student exchange to universities in other countries. We recommend that you plan to do this in the second or third semester of your studies.
A completed master’s degree is a prerequisite for applying for admission to research training within the Faculty of Humanities’ Ph.D. programme
