Finishing the Master´s Degree at the Dept. of Mathematics
Please be aware: this page is under construction.
Here we have gathered a few practical tips and useful web links that will help you when the deadline for submitting your masters thesis is approaching. Master´s degree programmes that are offered by the Department of Mathematics:
Master´s degree in Mathematics
Master´s degree in Computational Science and Engineering
Master´s degree in Modelling and Data Analysis
Front page and layout for thesis´ written in LaTeX
Go to the Institute library to have a look on what other students have done regarding layout, fonts etc.
DUO (Digitale utgivelser ved UiO) has a template for master`s degree thesis - just Microsoft Word.
Useful page about LaTeX
Examples of some front pages.
The Masters council has decided that the following should be written on the front page (and only this):
Title of the Thesis
Student´s name
Thesis for the Masters degree "programme name"
These are the programme names:
Master`s degree in Mathematics
Master`s degree in Computational Science
Master`s degree in Modelling and Data Analysis
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
University of Oslo
Month and year
The logo of The University of Oslo
If some other institutions involved - logos etc. should be placed on page 3.
Submitting the thesis in DUO
Submitting the thesis in DUO has been mandatory since 01.01.2007. Please note that it is only the submitting of the theis that is mandatory - students have a possibility to restrict their theses. A summary of the thesis is mandatory and this will be available for all. The summary should be half a page long. You will find more information here.
Print the receipt and deliver it togehter with the form for registering to the final exam.
It is possible to submit the thesis with out a username and password. Please read the information on the bottom of this page.
Printing of the Thesis
We have an agreement with Reprosentralen which means that you can get a requisition to print 6 copies of the thesis, 4 that you hand in and 2 for your personal use.
You can get this requisition from the study advisor (room 724, Abel).
You have to know the definite number of pages (bring a pdf-version of the thesis) when you pick up the requisition. If you want more than 2 copies, you can do this at the same time - but you have to pay for these.
The four copies to be handed in are for:
2 for the Faculty Library (remember to get a receipt)
1 for the supervisor
1 for the external examiner
List of good advice from Reprosentralen. Read this carefully before you submit your thesis.
The thesis is printed in black/white, but if necessary for the content of the thesis you can get up to seven pages of colour print. But only if it is strictly necessary and it has to be in agreement with the student adviser.
You bring a PDF file to Reprosentralen together with the requisition. The delivery to Reprosentralen must be before the submition deadline, and the receipt that the delivery has taken place must be handed in to the student adviser by 15.00h.
If you perfer to print your thesis by other means, you are free to do so, but the Dept. of Mathematics will not pay for the printing. In such case you have to hand in the finished papercopy (five copies) of the thesis by the deadline.
You then have to deliver the two copies for the fakultetsbiblioteket yourself. You will get a receipt that you have to hand in to the study advisor together with the three remaining copies. The study advisor will help you distribute the copies to the supervisor and the external examinor.
To be handed in to the study advisor
(if you use Reprosentralen):
-
Print the form for registering to the final exam and fill it out (see Registering to the final exam below)
-
Receipt form Reprosentralen within the submitting deadline (see Submitting deadline below)
-
When the thesis is printed from Reprosentralen - hand two copies in to the Faculty Library, remember to get a receipt.
-
Deliver abstract and the Thesis in DUO. Print the receipt.
-
Bring receipt from submitting the Theis in DUO.
-
Bring receipt/form from points 3, 4 and 5 to the student advisor at the same time that you hand in three copies of your Thesis.
Submitting deadline
You will find the deadline for submitting the masters thesis on the master programmes web pages. Eks: Master programme in Mathematics.
It is important to notice that the submittion deadline is by 15.00 on the given date and that this is definite! (If you have a deferment from the standard deadline during your studies, you will have an individual deadline.)
The receipt from Reprosentralen has to be handed in by the deadline. If you choose to use other means of printing you may do so, but the Department of Mathematics will not pay for it. AND you have to hand in five printed copies of the master´s thesis by the submittion deadline!.
If a thesis is not handed in within the submission deadline and no special application for deferment has be submitted, normally the student's right to study will be withdrawn. If an application for deferment has been submitted but is denied, normally the student's right to study will be withdrawn. The student will then need to apply for admission again. If the student is again accepted into the Master's degree programme, he/she will need to choose a thesis project which is different from the thesis which was supposed to be submitted. The theoretical syllabus corresponding to the original thesis project will be re-evaluated in regards to the student's new thesis project. The student should count on the theoretical syllabus being adjusted even if the new thesis project is within the same field as the first.
Registering to the final exam
Print out and fill in this form and bring it to the study advisor at least four weeks before the Final Exam. You should deliver this form well in advance to delivering your thesis to Reprosentralen.
Please remember:
All requirements to a bachelors degree or similar and the theoretical basis for the masters degree has to be satisfied before the final masters exam. Exam in the theoretical subjects has to be passed before the final masters exam.
The Final Exam
After the Thesis has been submitted and it has been decided that it will obtain at least the grade E, the masters study is ended with a oral examination.
The first part of the exam consists of a presentation of about 30 minutes where the student presents his/her work with the thesis. The presentation is public and both the supervisor and the external examiner have to be present. Other people might show up. The presentation will be followed by an oral examination/conversation.
The presentation together with the oral examination/conversation contribute to the final grade. If the Thesis is viewed to grade F (fail) and an oral exam cannot change this, there will not be held an exam.
If you need to borrow a projector for your presentation, please contact the student advisor so this can be arranged. (The projector is often booked in advance, so this should be done as soon as possible.)
Diploma
The diploma for MSc degree is written out by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It can take up to three months before the diploma is ready. This is due to the process of controlling all prior education (bachelor or similar). It is the student´s responsibility to make sure that he/she has all requirements in order.
