Master Studies in Politics and Development
For master students in political science who wish to focus on problems of development in the South there are three major opportunities that can of course be combined:
(1) Contextual analysis of local and ‘national’ politics in post-colonial settings.
● This field is introduced by a general course every Autumn semester with a number of prominent experts involved as lectures and supervisors (StV 4344B: Politics in developing countries: contextual analyses in theoretical perspective), co-ordinated by Professor Olle Törnquist. The first part of the course focuses on theoretical and comparative problems of state, democracy and governance as well as civic and popular engagement. The second part analyses these issues in regional contexts, primarily Africa and/or Asia and Latin America, as well as occasionally the Middle East and/or China – depending on the number of students and the availability of lecturers. However, a number of leading internal and external supervisors, are available on a regular basis, including Dr. Benedicte Bull on Latin America, Dr. Stein Sunstøl Eriksen, Jean-Pascal Daloz and Terje Tvedt on Africa, Dr. Nils Butenschøn on the Middle East and Harald Bøckman on China.
● In addition, there are two thematic courses based on research projects. One is about the Politics of poverty (StV 4324B) with leading scholar in this field Dr Dan Banik. The other is about Linkages between politics and society (StV 4347B), featuring problems of politicisation and political inclusion beyond elitist democracy- and peace building. The latter course is part of an international research and master studies programme co-ordinated by Professors Kristian Stokke and Olle Törnquist on ‘Power, Conflict and Democracy’. There is a special focus and exchange programmes with Indonesia and Sri Lanka but also comparative studies of other Asian, African and Latin American contexts.
(2) International relations in global as well as contextual African contexts.
● Senior scholars on general international relations including Professors Jeffry Checkel, Helge Hveem, Arild Underdal and Øyvind Østerud, run courses and offer supervision on Transnational Politics and Globalization (StV 4223B), International Political Economy (StV 4212B), Globalisering: Nord-Sør (StV 4286B), Geopolitikk og nye konfliklinjer (StV 4230B) and Internasjonal miljø- og ressursforvaltning (STV4214B).
● In addition, Dr. Karin Dokken and Dr. Morten Bøås, provide supervision in more contextual South-based perspectives on international relations and a course about Internasjonal politik og utenrikspolitik i Afrika sør for Sahara (StV 4287B).
(3) Problems of peace, conflicts and human rights.
● The special master programme on peace and conflict studies provide a number of courses of general interest for students of politics and development, including Selected Topics in Peace and Conflict Studies (StV4283B).
● Similarly, the politics department in co-operation with the Centre for Human Rights offer regular supervision and courses in international Human Rights, ideologies and political regimes StV 4321B) with Professor Bernt Hagtvet and Dr. Tore Lindholm as primus motor.
