Future and Emerging Technologies (FET)

FET supports collaborative research in order to extend Europe’s capacity for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation.

FET actions are expected to foster scientific collaboration across disciplines on radically new, high-risk ideas and accelerate development of the most promising emerging areas of science and technology.

The FET programme has three complementary strands to address different methodologies and scales, from new ideas to long-term challenges:

FET Open FET Proactive FET Flagships
  • Foster early and novel ideas;
  • Bottom-up, and in any Research area;
  • Include long-term vision, novelty, high-risk, inter-disciplinarity;
  • Target scientifically ambitious and foundational breakthroughs
  • Funding emerging research themes and research communities;
  • Top-Down basis;
  • Translate science into concrete technological directions by building on ‘proof of concept’;
  • Take innovations to the next level of Development
  • Large-scale research initiatives;
