About the Project

The NordEd project examines four aspects of the Nordic education model:

  • Pillar 1: Knowledge – Conflicting traditions, ideals, and concepts of knowledge in the Nordic countries’ educational policies, pedagogies, and practices.
  • Pillar 2: Curriculum – Curricular struggles and developments in Nordic schooling.
  • Pillar 3: Teacher Cultures and Teacher Education – The emergence of Nordic teacher cultures and teacher education.
  • Pillar 4: Policy Formulation and Reforms – Transnational policy agendas and the renegotiation of the Nordic model of education.

The choice of these pillars aims at producing a broad perspective on the emergence and current state of the national systems of education of the five Nordic countries in question. Within all of the four pillars, research will challenge the notion of one coherent ”Nordic Model of Education” by focussing  on discursive, normative and practical conflicts.

Coordinators of the four pillars are Inga Bostad (pillar 1), Harald Jarning (pillar 2), Jesper Eckhardt Larsen (pillar 3), and Berit Karseth / Bernadette Hörmann (pillar 4).

About the group

We form a diverse group of scholars within the fields of education, gender studies, philosophy, mathematics, music, theology, history and social science. This makes the group methodologically diverse. Our methods include policy network analysis, quantitative as well as qualitative comparative methods, historical document analysis, conceptual history, institutional history, history of ideas and philosophical/social-epistemological analysis.

The project is led by Professor Inga Bostad and brings together researchers from an array of institutes and research centres at the University of Oslo (IPED, ILS, IAKH, IFIKK, STK, IHS, IMV, UB, and TF). An international board of experts supervises the project, and within all of the four pillars, the project will develop Nordic networks and arenas of scholarly exchange.
