Learning outcomes

The aim of research and teaching is to understand astrophysical processes and systems, ranging from our own sun to stars, galaxies and the whole universe. Large numerical simulations and analysis of observational data are important tools. The master's programme in Astronomy is for those who want to use proficiency in physics, mathematics, computer science, and statistics to get a new understanding of the universe.

After completing a master's degree in astronomy you will have achieved:

Knowledge

You have an advanced level of understanding of the physical principles that are important in astronomy and astrophysics:

  • You have in-depth knowledge within the defined area of astronomy and astrophysics where you will complete a research assignment.
  • You are able to find relevant scientific texts in new fields and read, understand and summarize them.
  • You will be able to critically evaluate and analyze data and sources of error.

You are familiar with a wide range of methods from mathematics, statistics, and computer science:

  • You know the most important methods at an advanced level, and are able to find methods that are important to your research assignment, and quickly acquire sufficient knowledge on time.

Skills

You can identify and elaborate on relevant astronomical and astrophysical problems:

  • You can evaluate published work and data within a new topic and propose new and relevant research questions.

You can develop and apply advanced methods to solve astronomical and astrophysical problems:

  • You can develop and apply advanced analytical models.
  • You can develop and apply advanced numerical methods and program large codes that implement these.
  • You can structure, reduce, and present scientific data produced.
  • You can apply known methods to new problems.

General competence

You can find and apply methods from a variety of subjects to solve a professional problem through a major project work:

  • You develop towards professional maturity and can work independently.
  • You can communicate professionally, in writing and orally.
  • You can participate in the planning and management of a research project.
  • You develop a professional intuition and overall understanding to enable you to present and discuss professional topics, results and uncertainties.

You can communicate research questions, analysis and conclusions to both professionals and to the general public:

  • You can formulate precisely and scientifically with the correct use of subject terminology and expressions in English in a scientific dissertation.
  • You can present a scientific problem and results of research to both professionals and the general public verbally by the presentation of the master thesis.
  • You can communicate academic topics, analysis and conclusions to the general public in an understandable way.
