Why choose this programme?

Do you have a background in continuum mechanics and mathematics and would like to learn more? This field of study gives you the opportunity to choose between a wide range of topics. You can specialize in everything from arctic issues, tsunami research to biomechanics  and medical mechanics.  

About the programme

The master's programme in Fluid Mechanics gives you practical experience with scientific method and thinking, and teaches you to develop tools based on mathematics, informatics and mechanics. You use these tools to solve important problems of the type mentioned above. The master's programme in Fluid Mechanics deals with both fluid and solid mechanics with a common base of continuum mechanics.

Studies abroad

The master's programme in Mechanics offers possibilities for studies at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) in your third semester.

You can also go on exchange through the agreements offered by the University of Oslo. We recommend that you go during the second, or maybe the third, semester. Another possibility is to spend time abroad during your thesis work.

Further studies and work

After the study you will be well prepared for working in several fields both within the private and public sectors. Many of our master's theses are directly related to the problems and activities of technological companies and institutions in Norway. Mechanics can be a bridge between mathematics and physics and can be a suitable specialization for those who want to be science teachers in school. Some of the master's students who obtain very good results choose to continue on a research carrier by taking a doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Oslo or a university abroad.
