The Akershus aCute Headache Evaluation 2 (ACHE-2) - Epidemiology, clinical and radiological presentation of cerebral venous thrombosis in a Norwegian population – a retrospective study

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an uncommon disorder in the general population, butan important cause of stroke in young adults. CVT is a serious condition with high disability, and a challenge to diagnose because of the various clinical presentations including a very common presenting symptom to general practitioners and in the emergency wards, namely headache.
Furthermore, the diagnosis is not only based on clinical findings, but require a confirmatory
brain imaging. Risk factors of CVT have been suggested to be the same as for venous
thromboembolism (VTE). The treatment principles are anticoagulation, symptom management and prevention of cerebral herniation. The mortality rate is assumed to be approximately 10% and the overall long-term prognosis fairly good.
Most studies of CVT are multi-center studies with selected patients. Thus, the previous
incidence figures of 3-5/million/year are uncertain. Furthermore, the clinical presentations and
risk factors of patients in highly selected compared to more unselected populations may be
different.
The catchment area of our department is about 10 % of the total population of Norway. All
cases in this area with a CVT will be in touch with our department and stroke unit at initial
admission or as a part of the rehabilitation. Thus, this unique and complete patient population
will make it possible to estimate accurate population-based incidence figures.
