Genital cutting: (re)constructing what? Comparing the medicalisation of six different genital cutting practices

The overall aim of this study is to compare and contrast the medicalization of six different genital cutting practices: Girl and boy circumcision, cosmetic surgery on adults, surgery for intersex infants and trans adults and cutting as part of erotic or aesthetic activity.

Despite the fact that some academics, media debates and activists have highlighted commonalities between different genital cutting practices, they are commonly treated as rather unalike issues in legal, social and medical discourses and practices. Scholarship that have highlighted commonalities argue that comparison can lead to improved understanding of all practices. However, what such an improved understanding exactly involves remains unclear.

We explore an improved understanding by the use of a multiple case study methodology were qualitative interviews and (non-)participant observation are the main techniques for producing the data. This study will explore the six practices as six different cases, and aims to identify and explore actors and experiences with the (lack of) use of health care and social services according to a timeline: first, prior to the cutting; second, during the cutting and; third, after the cutting. By defining each genital cutting practice rigidly as separate cases, this will help to first identify the characteristics of the case (i.e. each genital cutting practice) and second this will help identifying what does not easily fit into the case and consequently how the case overlaps with the other cases.

The following research questions will guide the data production for each of the six genital cutting cases: Who are the actors involved prior to, under and after the cutting? What experiences do the actors have with the use, or lack of use, of health care and social services prior to, under and after the cutting?
