Obesity and its association with diabetes and related cardiometabolic risk factors in a rural Bangladesh
Background: Developing countries are increasingly vulnerable to the worldwide epidemic of obesity and related cardiometabolic risk factors namely diabetes (DM), metabolic syndrome (MS), hypertension (HTN). Obesity is a modifiable risk factor for DM and related cardiometabolic diseases. Population-based data on association of obesity and related cardiometabolic risks factors are very limited for rural Bangladeshi population.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of obesity and its association with DM and related cardiometabolic risk factors in a rural Bangladesh.
Design & source of data: Cross-sectional epidemiological study. Data were taken from Chandra Rural Diabetes Study, a population-based cross-sectional study in rural Bangladesh conducted in March 2009 to December 2009.
Setting: Rural community called Chandra, 40 km. north of capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka.
Study Duration: 6 months.
Study population: 2376 randomly selected subjects.
Statistical analysis: The association of obesity with DM and related cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed and their relationships were examined.
Main Outcomes: Association of obesity with DM and related cardiometabolic risks factors.
Study Coordination: Diabetic Association of Bangladesh and University of Oslo, Norway.
