Diet and dietary factors as predictors for frailty among elderly people

The proportion of people aged 65 years and above is rapidly increasing both in Norway and in the EU. Many elderly do not experience a healthy ageing, but become frail. Frailty is a multidimensional geriatric syndrome placed between healthy ageing and disability in the disablement process, and frail people are at higher risk of adverse health outcomes. An unhealthy diet can speed up the ageing process and negatively affect the progression of the frailty syndrome. This project will elucidate to what extent diet and dietary changes through time influence the development of frailty in elderly. We will use data from repeated measurements of diet and health outcomes from the Tromsø Study. The results obtained will enable the development and implementation of dietary guidelines to improve nutrition, health and quality of life in older people, which could be economically beneficial on a societal level by contributing to reduced health care costs.
