DIGIKOST: Digital registration of dietary intake and other lifestyle factors

Dietary intake and other lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol intake and physical activity are associated with risk of several chronic diseases, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes (1-5). In 2011, the Norwegian food-based dietary guidelines (Norwegian FBDG) were published by the health authorities, which aim at reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promote overall health in the general Norwegian population (3). The Norwegian FBDG recommend intake of a plant based diet dominated by vegetables, fruits, berries, whole grains, and fish and limited amounts of red and processed meat, salt, sugar, alcohol, and high-energy foods. These guidelines conform with other international dietary guidelines (1, 4). In Norway, only about 25% of the population complies with the national recommendations regarding intakes of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and red meat (6). Hence, there is a need to improve the compliance and to increase the population awareness of a healthy lifestyle. In order to identify the specific recommendation with low compliance in a population, valid and reliable assessment tools are fundamental. The assessment tools should have low respondent burden, such as being feasible, quick to complete and motivating in use to promote compliance and for reporting more precise lifestyle data. The development of high quality assessment tools is thus important.
Additionally, individual feedback on self-reported lifestyle factors may also contribute to higher compliance in completion of the assessment tools as well as encouraging improvements towards a healthy lifestyle. Digital assessment tools may prove useful in such cases. Today, there is no digital food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) aiming to benchmark against Norwegian FBDG.
