The Oslo Antioxidant Study: Dietary antioxidant intervention in smoking middle-aged and elderly men

A predominantly plant-based diet, rich in fruits and vegetables has been demonstrated to reduce risk of several chronic degenerative/oxidative stress-related diseases. The responsible mechanisms for the protective effect have not been established. Dietary plant products that strengthen the antioxidant defence are candidates for the health promoting effect but several other mechanisms may also be involved. Intervention trials with vitamin C, E and beta-carotene have, however, not been effective. It is therefore possible that the protective effect of fruits and vegetables may be due to other antioxidants with better/more specialized bioactivity (i.e. antioxidants other than vitamin C, E and beta-carotene tested in the initial trials). Recently, hundreds of different antioxidants have been detected in dietary plants, and these antioxidants seem to work in an integrated network, being able to recharge each other and thereby ensure proper protection at all subcellular compartments. The Blomhoff laboratory has recently generated a food table with the total content of antioxidants that cover more than thousand dietary plants, and other food products. We aim to study whether increasing the total intake of antioxidants by administration of antioxidant-rich plant products to middle-aged smoking men (i.e. individuals with presumably high global oxidative stress) increases the antioxidant defence, reduces oxidative damage, and improves biomarkers for oxidative stress, endothelial function and other cardiovascular risk factor in a controlled, 8-week intervention trial.
