Becoming a psychologist. A longitudinal study of the professional development of psychology students – their relational traits and competence, ethical awareness, and role-identity
The study aims to investigate a breadth of characteristics that are assumed to be of relevance in psychology students’ professional development and skills acquisition. The study will make use of a longitudinal, mixed-methods research design, i.e., self-report, performance, and observer-based data collected at several time-points during the professional education program of psychologists at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo.
A major aim of this study is to describe and analyze longitudinally the students’ acquisition of essential relational and communication skills, as well as ethical awareness and an incipient role identity during their basic and formative period of professional training. A further central task is to investigate how individual differences in professional orientation and skills are related to core personality characteristics, including ‘moral personality’ (i.e., values and character), social-relational attitudes, attachment orientation, and self-concept.
