UiO:Democracy's approach to interdisciplinary research
The challenges facing democracy are complex and multifaceted, reaching across politics, society, culture, technology and even nature. To strengthen and develop democracy, we cannot rely exclusively on perspectives and insights found within the traditional boundaries of any single academic disciplines.
Therefore, UiO:Democracy funds interdisciplinary research groups exploring democracy's many facets, as a form of governance, practice and a way of life.
As of 2026, we fund twelve active research groups taking an interdisciplinary approach to topics such as understanding and cataloguing anti-democratic arguments, how technology design affects democracy, the democratic response to the climate crisis and the political power exerted by global philantropic foundations.
Have a closer look at our existing research groups here.
UiO:Democracy now has a new call for applications for interdisciplinary research groups, with an application deadline of 15 September 2026.
About funding from UiO:Democracy
To apply, the research group must consist of researchers from at least two faculties at UiO.
This workshop is an excellent opportunity to help develop your interdisciplinary idea and get to know potential partners. Welcome!
