Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Foundation programme (English language) for academic staff at the University of Oslo.

Programme structure

The foundation programme for academic staff at the University of Oslo consists of:

  • An introductory module (120 hours)
  • One large module (30 hours) or two small modules (15 hours each)
  • Pedagogical development work at your own department/faculty (50 hours)

The Introductory Module

The aim of the introductory module is to support academic staff to advance their pedagogical knowledge and to employ this knowledge in their regular teaching activities. The course intends to provide a vocabulary for understanding teaching and learning in higher education, to engage in developing and enacting new ways of teaching and to reflect on and discuss teaching experiences in a safe environment. Elective Modules

Through the choice of one large (30 hours) or two small (15 hours) elective modules, academic staff can specialise in selected topics such as research supervision, teaching critical reflection or assessment and examinations. The courses on offer vary each semester, and some courses alternate Norwegian and English language. For more information, please confer the course calender.  

Pedagogical Development Work at your own Department/Faculty 

This course in pedagogical development work (50 timer) provides participants with the opportunity to get engaged in ongoing development initiatives at their own department or faculty. The course starts in January 2020 and will subsequently be offered each semester. More information will be provided online in October 2019.   

The aim of the programme

The overall aim of the program is to contribute a culture for developing teaching and learning at the University of Oslo. Through a variety of activities the participants are invited to increase their awareness of teaching approaches that may develop student learning. The program invites reflection on the participants’ teaching experiences and provides opportunities try out innovative approaches.

Application and admission
The programme is open for tenured and temporary staff academic staff including doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The number of participants is limited. Admission is based on the date of application.

Diploma to certify foundational knowledge of teaching and learning in higher education is issued to all participants who have completed all parts of the  program. The diploma will be sent out in the beginning of the following semester after you have completed the course.
