Course content
Students work primarily with non-fiction texts and exercises with themes from Norwegian daily life and society. Important and basic points of grammar are examined, and attention is given to variations in the Norwegian language. Students increase their vocabulary and learn idioms and varied ways of expressing themselves in different contexts.
Learning outcome
To understand oral presentations on everyday life and current issues, including the ability to understand the main ideas of radio and television programs. To read textbooks and simple authentic texts and newspaper articles. To have sufficient command of both oral and written Norwegian so that errors do not interfere with communication.

Application period
Applications for spring 2021 is closed. The application period for the autumn will be May 3 - June 3.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Applicants must meet the basic requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway. It is presumed that the applicant has passed Norwegian Level I with a minimum of “D” or better in both the oral and written examinations, or Norskprøven level A2. If you have attended a Norwegian level A2 course outside of the UiO (Norskprøven level A2), documentation of this must be produced on the first day of class. Students who fail to document their A2 level will be demoted to level I. To be admitted you must submit required supporting documents.

This course is equivalent to the courses listed above, and is also equivalent to Folkeuniversitetet's Levels B1 (4-5) and European level B1, but does not automatically qualify one for a residence permit.
Norwegian courses up to a maximum of 40 credits can be used as part of a degree at the University of Oslo for international students. Contact your department for more information.
Teaching
Classroom sessions include instruction and group work for a total of 84 classroom hours. One classroom hour lasts for 45 minutes.
Regular attendance is expected of all participants, but mandatory attendance is not required.

Examination
Exams spring and autumn 2020
Due to the current Covid-19 situation, there has been a change to the examination format for the spring and autumn semester.
The exam will consist of a written and an oral examination. The written examination counts for 25% of the total grade and lasts for 1,5 hours. The oral examination counts for 75% of the total grade and lasts for 45 minutes. The written examination will be a take home exam i Inspera, the oral exam will be held in Zoom.
Grades spring and autumn 2020
The exam will be graded on pass/fail scale. All parts of both the oral and the written exam must be passed to receive a passing grade.

Regular exams
The final exam consists of a written and oral examination. The written exam lasts for 3 hours and counts for 50% of the total grade. Part of the written exam includes a dictation. The oral exam lasts for 10-15 minutes and counts for 50% of the total grade.
The oral exam will be arranged before the written exam, your teacher will tell you when your oral exam will take place. There will also be information about the time and place of the written exam in StudentWeb.

Digital examination
The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Examination results are available three weeks after the exam, at the latest. Grades and transcripts will be available via StudentWeb.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Candidates may re-sit an exam free of charge if they: a) have a valid absence (doctor’s note), or b) failed the examination.
Candidates who want to re-sit the exam to improve their grades, or did not show up for the scheduled exam must pay a fee of NOK 2 250 to re-sit the exam.You can take the exam up to three times. You cannot re-sit an examination if you have used the maximum number of examination attempts. Candidates who re-sit the exam must take all parts of the exam again (both written and oral exams).
Candidates who re-sit the exam may take the exam in May, July and December when regular exams are arranged. Candidates who are re-sitting NORA exams can also re-sit the exam in the summer at the ISS exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Students who need a specially adapted exam must submit a Request for Special Examination Form along with medical documentation to NORA by September 1 for the autumn semester and February 1 for the spring semester.
Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
NORA0120 does not qualify for financial support from Lånekassen.
