Achievement requirements

The aim is that by completing the course the students will possess thorough knowledge and understanding of the legal rules applicable to casualties involving ships.

Knowledge

At the completion of this course the students will have:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of the liability issues in shipping and how they are regulated through international conventions and national legislation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how salvage is regulated.
  • Knowledge of the structure of marine insurance and what problems are addressed in different marine insurance contracts.
  • Advanced knowledge of rules and regulations concerning:
    • Ship control and classification
    • General rules on liability in shipping
    • Vicarious liability of the ship owner
    • Limitation of liability.
    • Oil pollution liability
    • Liability for collision
    • Salvage
    • Marine Insurance
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations concerning:
    • Mortgages, maritime liens, retention and arrest of ships
    • General average
    • Maritime inquiries

General competence

At the completion of this course the students will:

  • Have the ability to perform relevant legal work relating to maritime liability, salvage and marine insurance – in law firms, insurance companies, shipping companies or public administration.
  • Possess the theoretical and methodological tools required to analyze the topics in accordance with legal scientific methods.
