MBV9300BTS – Membrane Proteins; from Isolation to Crystals

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course will be highly focused on methodology and decision process involved in membrane protein crystallisation. The student will be grouped into 3-4 group that will rotate between different stations, within the laboratory. First station will involve “Membrane proteins identification and small scale membrane isolation” the second station “Large scale membrane protein purification” and the third station “Membrane Protein lipidation and Crystallization trials”. There will be 3 overview talks from both international and internal speakers.

Learning outcome

You will have "hands-on" experience with membrane protein expression, solubility studies which involves handling of detergents as well as purification of membrane proteins and crystallization.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge of protein structure and protein structure determination.

Overlapping courses

No overlap with other courses.

Teaching

Practical lab. work and teoretical lessons in full time for one week. The teaching will be at Centre for Molecular Medicine (NCMM) Forskningsparken, Blindern, Oslo
A selected set of articles should be studied before course start. Estimated time for this activity: one week.
