KJM9150 – Advanced Inorganic Chemistry
The course provides the students with an overview of the fundamental theories and applications of inorganic materials. Particular emphasis is placed on transition metal complexes, binary and ternary transition metal oxides and main group compounds. The chemical behaviour together with the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of these families of materials will be discussed in detail. The course is aimed at students within the fields of inorganic/metallorganic chemistry and materials chemistry.
On successful completion of this course:

- you can elucidate the electronic structure of a variety of d-metal complexes.
- you can describe the structure and properties of different classes of transition metal oxides

- you understand the applications of battery materials and supercapacitors
- you can rationalize and discuss current issues in inorganic chemistry by writing a review article on a given topic.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.
Recommended previous knowledge
KJM1100 – General chemistry (continued) or MENA1000 – Materials, energy and nanotechnology (continued), and KJM1120 – Inorganic Chemistry (continued) or similar courses. In addition, it is recommended that the students have completed MENA3000 – Functional materials or MENA4000 – Functional materials. Without this background, the course may require some extra work. KJM1130 – Physical Chemistry I - thermodynamics and kinetics is also recommended.
10 credits overlap with KJM5150 – Advanced Inorganic Chemistry
The course comprises a total of 30 hours lecturing and 10-15 hours of exercise classes. You are also expected to write an essay in the form of a review article on a given topic. The essay has to be handed in before you can attend the exam. The first lecture and the first group seminar are mandatory. If you are unable to join, the Expedition Office has to be informed in advance (phone 22 85 54 46, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org). If you fail to register as an active student for the course in either of these ways, you will loose access to the course for the given semester.
Written exam (4 hours) counts 80 % of the final grade. You are also expected to write an essay in the form of a review article on a given topic. The essay has to be handed in before you can attend the exam and will count 20 % of the final grade.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
