Syllabus/achievement requirements

Recommended literature:

[T] "Topics in Real and Functional Analysis" by G. Teschl. These lecture notes are freely downloadable from the author's homepage.

[R] "Functional Analysis" by W. Rudin.

[KF] "Elements of the Theory of Functions and Functional Analysis" by A.N. Kolmogorov and S.V. Fomin.

[RN] "Functional Analysis" by F. Riesz and B. Sz.-Nagy.

If you don't follow the lectures, the following parts of Teschl, plus Fourier series (as, for example, covered by N.S. Larsen's notes for the last year course), will be sufficient for the exam:

Chapters 1-3, 5, Sections 6.1 (only spectrum of an operator), 7.1-7.5, 7.9, 8.1-8.3.
