INTHE4003 – Theorethical Foundations, part 3

Course content

This course focuses on three areas of community health that are of rapidly increasing importance, but which get insufficient emphasis. As health researchers we need to address this areas in a way that can be the basis for political action.

This section is divided in three areas:

  • Disability, Ageing and Rehabilitation
  • Mental Health
  • Drugs and Society

Learning outcome

This course will focus on giving the student knowledge in three area: In Ageing, Disability and Rehabilitation th aim is to give an introduction to the socio-economic and medical changes leading to a growing elderly population. In mental Health the aim is for the student to become familiar with basic concepts and approaches in psychiatry and mental health care, with an emphasis on community care. They should be able to apply general strategies of prevention and community based rehabilitation to the field of mental health, and have an understanding of contextual aspects and cultural variations which are relevant for mental health care in different societies. The emphasis will be on the situation in low- and middle-income countries. In drugs & Society the aim is to give an introduction to the role of pharmaceuticals in health care. The course also covers socio-economic factors that influence drug use and issues of regulation in policy planning.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.


Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
