PED4306 – Education, Equity and Social Justice

Course content

This course explores the ideals of equality and equity in education and how they interplay with globalization and current social changes.

The course provides specialized knowledge and research tools to enable you to analyse equality and equity efforts in educational policies and practices.

The themes of the course include:

• Ethical-political perspectives on education, globalization and social change

• Key concepts, dimensions and interrelationships between equity, quality and relevance

• Education and social justice

Learning outcome

In this course you learn to:

 

  • Understand theories and methodologies that help to explore the ethical-political dimensions of equality and equity in education
  • Understand and know how to analyse key concepts, dimensions and interrelationships between equality, equity, quality and relevance
  • Demonstrate capacity to identify pertinent research issues for independent analysis and contribution to the field
  • Demonstrate capacity to present an issue in a focused manner in accordance with academic formalities
  • Document analytical competences of relevance to the field of research

Admission

Participation requires admission to the Master’s Programme Utdanning, danning og oppvekst or Comparative and International Education. The course is open for master level exchange students.

Teaching

The courses combine lectures with seminars that run parallel with the lectures. The seminars engage students in workshops, group work, exercises and oral presentations.

There is a mandatory 60% attendance requirement for the seminars.

Access to teaching

You must be admitted to this course in order to take part in the activities offered.

Examination

The exam consist of two parts

  1. Individual paper: You are required to write a paper of 2000 words as a home assignment. Details for submission deadline and other formal requirements will be given at the beginning of the semester
  2. Oral Exam:  The oral exam covers the literature of the course and lasts 25-30 minutes.

 

The paper must be passed before you may take the oral exam.

The final grade will be based on the combined results of the written and oral parts of the exam. The written and oral exams are given equal weight (50% each).

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

In order for you to take the oral exam, the paper must receive a pass grade. If you want to improve your grade, you may submit a rewritten paper next time the exam is offered. You may also retake only the oral exam the next time the exam is offered without submitting a new paper. If the paper is graded to pass grade, but you fail the oral exam or you do not take the oral exam for any reason, you may take the oral exam the next time the exam is offered without submitting a new paper.
