PED4404 – Learning cultures, leadership and motivation in working life

Course content

In this course we ask

  • What does cutting edge in research say about factors that can be said to be facilitators and barriers for learning, innovation and work related well-being in the work place? 
  • What is the significance of the advent of technology in all work processes in relation to such factors?

We will be focusing on organizational factors that can be said to advance or hinder the development of a culture for learning in organizations and in working life in general. We will also look at different approaches to how different styles of leadership may be considered to suited to specific situations and conditions. 

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course you are expected to 

Have knowledge about 

  • The content of selected classic and new theoretical frameworks and models for studying learning cultures.
  • Modes of leadership and different forms of motivation in working life. 
  • Studies of the role technology in the processes of leadership and motivation. 

Have the skills to 

  • Choose a theoretical perspective that will form the basis pf your master thesis inside or outside the scope of the course perspectives. 
  • Compose academic and theoretical text at an advanced master's level. 

Have the competence to 

  • Critically evaluate competing theories and frameworks of understanding within a chosen field of research at an advanced level. 
  • Argue the strengths and weaknesses of different theories and frames of understanding. 

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The course is a compulsory part of the specialization "Kunnskapsutvikling og læring i arbeidslivet". 

Qualified exchange students and students from other Master's program may be admitted if there is capacity. 

Applicants outside the program will be ranked base don time of application. 

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

It is recommended that you have completed the courses in the first and second semester of the program or that you have acquired equivalent knowledge through other studies/courses. 

Teaching

In the course different pedagogical methods are used, such as 

  • lectures/seminars
  • net based activities 
  • group processes in connection with different case assignments. 

You are expected to take active part in the different activities. 

Compulsory components

  • Participation in the first item on the schedule is compulsory. 
  • Individual work: A presentation on a given subject/problem. The presentation must be given in the seminar. 
  • Individual work: A report of 5-6 pages (excluding references) focusing on learning cultures, leadership and/or motivation. 

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

The course is reserved for students in the specialization KULA and others who have been admitted after applying as stated above.  

Examination

Home assignment. 

Individual paper of 8-10 pages (excluding references). 

All compulsory components must be approved before you make take the exam. 

Two sensors. 

The home assignment is the basis for grades. 

Digital home examination

The home examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera.You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

The assignment requirements will be given in English. You must write your paper in English. 

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Compulsory components that have been approved are valid for two years. If you fail the exam, you may retake it the next time the course is offered without retaking the compulsory components. 

If your compulsory components are not approved, you must retake the whole course in order to take the exam. 

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
