The occurrence and delimitation of Cylindrotheca in Oslofjorden
The diatom genus Cylindrotheca has one species, C. closterium recorded from Oslofjorden and is observed all year both in planktonic and benthic environments. It may be difficult to distinguish morphologically from several other pennate diatoms such as Nitzchia longissima, Lennoxia faveolata and some Gyrosigma- and Cymatosira-species. This project aims at delimiting Cylindrotheca and morphologically similar species occurring in the plankton of Oslofjorden.
Sampling onboard R/V Trygve Braarud once every month during one year.
Collect net hauls.
Measure salinity, temperature, fluorescence and water transparency.
Identify Cylindrotheca and similar species in live and acid cleaned net-hauls using light and electron microscopy.
Which species of Cylindrotheca are present in Oslofjorden and how can they be separated from similar species using morphological characters?
