Timo Lohrmann is a PhD Candidate at the University of Oslo and is part of Statistics and Data Science. His background is in physics, more specifically in theoretical quantum optics and particle physics. During his bachelor and master, he discovered his passion for statistics and machine learning and decided to combine both fields for his PhD thesis. Here, he improves and develops statistical algorithms for applications in theoretical particle physics.

In his presentation, he will shortly introduce Gaussian processes and then explain what dividing local Gaussian processes are. He will motivate their use in high energy physics and then go into further detail about differences and his contributions to the existing algorithm.

Program

11:30 – Doors open and lunch is served

12:00 – "An application of dividing local Gaussian processes in theoretical particle physics" by Timo Lohrmann (PhD Candidate, Statistics and Data Science)

This event is open for all PhD candidates and postdocs. No registration needed.

About the seminar series

Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch, soft drinks and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch to PhD candidates in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies hus every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here (download).

Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long! Read more about the seminar series here.
