Design4Dem
Designing Technologies for Democracy
Democracy is under increasing pressure. Can technology design contribute to strengthening participatory democracy?
About the group
The main focus of the group is how technology better can support democratic processes, and particularly how design processes affect the consequences of new technology, especially in the context of participatory democracy.
Design4Dem is an interdisciplinary research group consisting of researchers from the Department of Informatics, Centre for Development and Environment, and The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
Among them are experts in interaction design, transformative design, psychology, business development, and technology, as well as researchers specialising in conflict, technology, and development.
The wide range of expertise enables the group to address issues related to the role of technology in democratic processes.

NordiCHI Workshop October 2026
We invite researchers, designers, practitioners, and activists to participate in our full-day in-person workshop at NordiCHI’26 to explore how technology design might help address the pulse of democracy. The workshop focuses on four interconnected themes, engagement, silence, friction, and storytelling, as lenses for examining how technologies shape democratic participation, exclusion, contestation, disagreement and collective futures.
