Create and Use an AI Assistant An AI assistant is a conversational partner that uses artificial intelligence to answer questions, suggest solutions, or provide guidance. By customizing the instructions for the assistant, you can tailor it to your own needs.
To Create an AI Assistant
1. Select AI Assistants from the left menu.
2. Click Create AI Assistant.

3. Fill in the fields in the form that opens.
- Name: Give the assistant a clear name (required).
- Description: Write a short explanation of what the assistant will be used for. This helps you and others understand its purpose.
- Instructions: This is the system prompt itself. Describe here how the assistant should respond and behave. The clearer the instructions, the better the results.
- Model: Choose which AI model the assistant should use. Some models support up to yellow data, others also support red data. If you choose a model that supports red data, you can use such data in the conversation itself.
- Show reasoning: Check this box if you want the model to show how it analyzed its way to the answer.
- Conversation starters: Add some standard questions or tasks. These will be shown as buttons at the top of the conversation, making it easy to get started.
- Files: Upload relevant files that the assistant should use in its answers.
Note: Files you upload here cannot contain red data.
4. Click Create.
5. (Optional) Enable sharing if you want others to be able to use the assistant. Read more about sharing below.
6. Click to use the AI Assistant.
About Sharing AI Assistants
When you enable sharing, a link to your AI assistant is created. You can copy the link and share it with others, such as a colleague, fellow student, or a student group. Those who get access to the link can use the AI assistant in their own conversations.
Note: Sharing AI assistants can only be done between users from the same institution. It is not possible to share across institutions that have GPT UiO.
Trust and Responsibility When Sharing
An AI assistant can be set up with its own instructions, which can be hidden by the person creating the AI assistant. This will influence what it answers. Therefore, it is important that both the person sharing and the person receiving are aware of this responsibility.
If you share an AI assistant: Be transparent about how the assistant is configured. If you choose to share an assistant with hidden instructions, it is important that it does not manipulate or deceive the recipients. Ensure that the answers are honest and within the bounds of what the user expects.
If you receive a shared AI assistant: Be aware that you need to trust the person who shared the assistant with you. The instructions they have given the AI assistant will affect the results and the answers you receive.
