Why choose this programme option?

This programme option has from the academic year 2023/2024 been replaced by the programme option Applied Basin Analysis: Processes, Resources and Evolution of Life.

For all fields of study, see Geosciences (master's two years).

In this programme option, we integrate geology and geophysics on different scales, from regional plate tectonics to basin and reservoir scale. We employ several types of geological and geophysical data and use industry-standard tools and methods to analyse this data.

This broad and interdisciplinary study is intended for students with a background in geosciences and covers most aspects of petroleum exploration, field development and production. Geology and geophysics are integrated at various scales, from regional plate tectonics to basin- and reservoir scales.

The teaching activities are closely related to research activities at the department, covering a wide range of disciplines such as sedimentology, structural geology, geophysics, petroleum geochemistry, geomechanics, and stratigraphy.

The master's programme option in Petroleum Geoscience prepares students for a career in the petroleum industry and associated activities, or in geophysical prospecting. It is a broad, interdisciplinary and profession-oriented study.

The study also provides a solid basis in sedimentary geology and geophysics for further studies towards a PhD.
