- Choosing Nordic Media was a no brainer!

- The best thing about the Nordic Media programme is the people, says Gabi, a Nordic Media student from Norway.

Why did you decide to study at the Nordic Media programme?

For me it was a no brainer: I wanted to study media, in English, and I wanted to study at the University of Oslo. Also I enjoy meeting new people from different cultures, and I think that having a English degree and master's thesis will be a great benefit in an increasingly globalized work market.

What is your academic background?

I have a bachelor’s degree in Media Studies from UiO.

How do you like living in Oslo?

I love living in Oslo, I have lived here pretty much all my life. I guess the only thing that would hold people back from enjoying this city is that it is expensive to live here.

Describe a regular day at the university

A regular day would entail a lot of coffee-breaks with your friends and classmates, studying, attending a lecture or seminar, having yet another coffe break and do some more studying. And if you find yourself in the need of some downtime, the Department of Media and Communication really is the place to be, because you can turn any classroom into a movie theater, just borrow a film from the department or bring your own. Or you could play Playstation 3 on the big screen in the meeting room behind the reception, or take a power nap on one of the couches in Rosebud (the student society). I recommend doing all of the above at least once during a semester. The great perk of studying media is that no one can give you a hard time for enjoying a movie or a PS3-game during study hours.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love spending time with friends and watch movies or - when it´s warm outside - having barbecues in one of the big parks in Oslo. I also enjoy taking pictures and playing around with them in photoshop. Other than that I work at my part time job, and sometimes I volunteer at a cafè for the mentally and physically challenged.

How do you get along with the other students?

We get along great. I have made a lot of new friends during this programme, and they come from all over the world, from Mexico to China. I think we hang out as much outside campus as we do on campus. I also think the Nordic Media course we had early on in the programme really helped speed up the getting to know each other process, because we had a lot of short school trips together visiting different media institutions.

The best thing about the Nordic Media programme?

Can I say the people? The Nordic Media class, and the friends I have made during this programme.

What are your plans for your master´s thesis?

Getting it done in time and being happy and proud of the result.
