What sparked your interest in becoming part of INTED?
I consider myself practically oriented. I am interested in issues that emerge in workplaces and working life more broadly. In that context, an interdisciplinary approach feels natural. I have found that when engaging with professionals from different backgrounds, interdisciplinarity serves as an effective bridge-builder.
What do you see as the potential of interdisciplinary education?
The potential is significant, but interdisciplinarity is also a natural part of the knowledge and skills students acquire. On the one hand, it is an important tool for applying knowledge in practice. On the other, it reflects the reality that most challenges are complex and multifaceted. Its potential also lies in encouraging students to use interdisciplinary approaches to stimulate their own curiosity and continue learning. At the same time, it helps them become confident representatives of their own discipline and area of expertise.
Why is INTED important?
INTED is important because we need knowledge about how to translate the recognition of interdisciplinarity into concrete activities and learning formats that foster more interdisciplinary collaboration. If we believe interdisciplinarity is important, we need to understand how universities can create engaging and effective learning experiences and provide students with the foundation they need to become interdisciplinary thinkers and collaborators.
With interdisciplinarity on the rise, what is the future of higher education?
Universities and higher education institutions have a unique role in society as creators of knowledge and providers of learning. We are constantly challenged by societal developments, whether they involve emerging technologies, changing ideas about society, conflicts, or climate-related challenges.
We must remain committed to addressing these challenges and continue to be relevant by adapting to change in ways that preserve our identity while also enabling us to develop new ways of working.
