Course content

This seminar is an optional afternoon/evening lecture series open to all ISS students. Topics covered include Norwegian history, political system, welfare state, economy, environmental issues, gender issues and family, minority and immigration, media, education, literature, visual arts, music, religion and identity.

The seminar can be combined with all other ISS courses. Please note, we do not accept applications only for afternoon seminars.

An overview and understanding of Norwegian culture and society in a historical and contemporary perspective.

Admission

You must be enrolled in another course at International Summer School to attend this course.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway. Minimum academic requirements.

10 credits overlap with NORINT0500 – Norwegian Life and Society

Teaching

The seminar consists of 8 lectures, approximately 2 and 1/2 hours each. Classroom sessions include lectures from the course leader and guest lecturers. The course plan and reading list on the semester page will be updated in May.

Examination

This is an open seminar for ISS students. The seminar includes an obligatory pass/fail assignment that all students must take in order to take the final exam. The exam will be a written examination that lasts for 3 hours.

Detailed information for the examinations will be published on the ISS website, and will be available in the week preceding the exams.

You can check your results and order transcripts in Søknadsweb three weeks after the exam.

Digital examination

The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Candidates who have a re-scheduled or new examination are allowed take the next ordinary examination. Only students with either valid absence (doctor's note) or students who failed the exam can re-sit an exam.

Withdrawal from an examination

A student can take the class and sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, they must withdraw from the exam on Studentweb 2 weeks prior to the exam at the latest. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
