Writing a thesis

During your Master's Degree studies you are to write a thesis of 60 credits (equivalent to one year of full-time work). The thesis is to be submitted in Inspera in addition to DUO (digital publications at UiO) via StudentWeb. Below you will find information about writing a thesis, available templates and the typesetting system LaTeX.

Design

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA) does not have formal typographical requirements for the Master's theses, but it is highly recommended that you use the templates below in regards of layout/design. To see submitted theses of former students at ITA, go here.

Printed copies:

ITA does not demand a printed version of your thesis, but if you would like to have printed copies, the institute will cover the expenses for up to six copies. The printing of the thesis is done by Reprosentralen and the preferred format is PDF. For more information, go here.

Templates

Templates for theses:

  • LaTeX template (The preferred template at ITA. The front page is an older one, if you want a newer version, see Template - front page below).
  • The Graphic center at UiO requires from you to use one of their templates if you wish to have a printed copy of your thesis. You should therefore consider using one of the templates both for handing in your thesis and for printing your thesis. Click here for more information about printing

LaTeX is commonly used at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and most theses at ITA is written in LaTeX. The link below will provide you with information about LaTex (for both beginners and intermediate users):
