Submissions

The purpose of MES4020 is to encourage you to think systematically about the research you are doing this semester. To this end, your “exam” consists of two submissions where you are asked to reflect on your field work, one of which must be submitted and approved before the final exam paper.

  • The first submission is a 6-10-page field report explaining your choice of methodologies, the process of data collection, and reflections on the research process. The paper should engage with at least one of the texts on the syllabus. It should be emailed to your advisor and uploaded to Fronter by November 3rd. The field report must be approved by your primary advisor in order to qualify for the final submission.

  • The final submission consists of (1) the aforementioned field report, revised after comments from your supervisor, and (2) one of the following options, to be determined in consultation with your advisor:
  1. Translation (into English or a Scandinavian language) of an original text (2-4 pages) within the student’s Middle East language of specialization.
  2. Transcription in the language of specialization of 1-3 recorded interviews (depending on length).
  3. Translation into English or a Scandinavian language of 1-3 recorded interviews (depending on length).
  4. Translation of any kind of sources in the language of specialization, for instance parts of a movie, a TV show, blog discussions, speeches, etc.

Regardless of the alternative chosen, the advisor must also be provided with the original text or media recording in order to evaluate the submission.

The final submission should be uploaded to a submission folder in Fronter by 11:00 December 1st.
