ENG4310 - Literary Theory in English

Course content

The course offers an overview of major trends within literary theory of the twentieth century, such as Formalism, Structuralism, Deconstruction, New Historicism, Feminist criticism, Post-colonial studies, Queer studies, Book history and Reception studies. The syllabus consists of a selection of important theoretical articles.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will have:

  • increased your theoretical awareness before writing your master`s
    thesis by having been introduced to a selection of critical approaches and methodologies.
  • developed a better understanding of central developments within
    literary theory in the twentieth century and up until today.

This course is only for students admitted to the master program Europeiske litteraturstudier or LeP/LaP.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Teaching

Seminar. Taught throughout the first half of the semester with 2 hours per week, 14 hours in all.

Attendance is obligatory at at least five out of the seven seminars. Read more about guidelines relating to obligatory activities.

Students are expected to participate actively in the seminar discussions, which are the basis for teaching (in addition to a certain amount of lecturing). Students prepare by studying the syllabus and completing assignments they are given in class or that are posted in Fronter. All handouts in connection with the course will be available in Fronter.

Examination

The assessment of the course is based on three-day take-home exam where students are to write an essay of approximately 5 pages.

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Withdrawal from an examination

A student may sit this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do so in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit the exam.

Special examination arrangements

If you have a disability or a health problem that entails significant inconvenience in an examination situation, you may be considered for special examination arrangements. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
