Red Hat or Ubuntu

Linux penguin

Linux is widely used at the UiO both for work stations and servers. You may use two Linux variant at the UiO cable LAN: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora. On the wireless network you may use the Linux variant of your choice. The UiO has an agreement with Red Hat which permits both students and persons employed by the UiO to use Red Hat Enterprise Linux on their private computers.

Getting started

Can be used by students, staff and members of faculty.

If you want to set up and use a Linux computer in your daily work environment, you need to confer with the local IT staff. They know best how to do this and can advice on how best to proceed and whether or not you should NFS mount your personal disk partition and settings. Please note that Linux is not a supported platform on all departments.
