Universal App or Rosetta?

The tutorial is for those who have a Mac with an M1 processor, and shows how to set an application to run with Rosetta instead of as a Universal App. This solves e.g. plugin issues for Endnote, Zoom and Reaper.

How to enable the Endnote plugin in Word

If you start Word as a Universal App, you will get an error message stating that Word is unable to load the Endnote plugin, as it is not compatible with the Word version.

To resolve this issue, set Word to open with Rosetta.

  1. Quit both Microsoft Word and Endnote.
  2. Go to the Applications folder and select the Microsoft Word application by clicking on the icon once (don't start the application, just select it).
  3. Then go to the File menu at the top of the screen and select Show Info.
  4. Under General, check the Open using Rosetta option.
  5. Restart Microsoft Word and the error message will disappear.

How to enable Zoom plugin in Outlook

If you have installed the Zoom Outlook plugin for Outlook for Mac and do not get Zoom in the calendar part of Outlook, do the following:

  1. Quit both Outlook and Zoom.
  2. Go to the Applications folder and select the Microsoft Outlook program by clicking on the icon once (you should not start the program, just select it).
  3. Then go to the File menu at the top of the screen and select Get Info.
  4. Under General, check the Open using Rosetta option.
  5. Start Outlook and again, and the icon will appear in the calendar.

Microsoft and Zoom have announced that the Zoom plugin for Outlook for Mac will be disabled in May 2021 and will not work after that.
