Update macOS

It is important to keep your computer up to date. Updates fixes bugs and security vulnerabilities that are discovered in the operating system, while upgrades expand, modify, and improve functionality. Your system should continuously be updated and security patched.

For systems 10.7 (Lion) to 10.13 (High Sierra), system updates were made via the App Store. If you have one of these systems, we recommend that you download and install Mac OS 10.14 Mojave from the link below. Then follow the procedure described below for further upgrades.

For MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) and newer, the software update settings are made in the "Software update" control panel.

Open Software Update Panes
-> AppleMenu -> System Preferences -> Software Update

System update panel

If updates are available, this will be in the window with an "Upgrade Now" button at the back. Click this to start the update.
You will be informed and reminded of available updates in several places in the system, and you will also be able to start updating from the notification dialog that will appear in the right corner.

If there is more than one update available, you can choose which updates you want to run. Click on the little blue "More info" link. This opens a window where you can deselect individual updates.

At the bottom of the window there is an option for "Update the Mac automatically". If the machine is in operation, this box must have at least one minus in it. This indicates that some selections under the "Advanced" button are turned on.

  • Check for update
  • Download new updates as they become available
  • Install system data files and security updates

These options allow security patches to be installed automatically, other updates to be downloaded and queued. You are regularly notified that there are updates that you have not installed.

In addition, there are the options "Install macOS updates" and "Install software updates from the App store". These two choices are voluntary.

If you have a machine that is not operated by UIO, we recommend that you, as a minimum, check "Check for update, Download new ... and Install system data files.
