Who can get it?

There are several flavours of VDIs available for all UiO users.

The two standard VDI types

There are two standard variants of VDI desktops available to employees and students: UiO Windows Desktop and Silver.

UiO Windows Desktop

This is a desktop intended for:

  • Accessing UiO resources 
  • Running Microsoft Office applications

Silver

This is a desktop intended for:

  • Accessing UiO resources
  • Courses
  • Accessing UiO applications for research

The following are some of the applications that are installed in the Silver desktop:

  • CaseViewer
  • Matlab and various custom toolboxes
  • RStudio
  • SPSS
  • Gephi
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Labview
  • Stata SE
  • Git
  • PowerShell
  • Python
  • Anaconda
  • solidworks
  • Zotero
  • QGIS

VDI flavours with more power

We also provide variants of the Silver desktops with more CPU and memory, called Gold and Platinum. These desktops have the same software as Silver.

Additionally, all of the pools above can be delivered with GPU, a Graphics Processing Unit. These pools will have the suffix "+", for instance Silver+.

IMPORTANT: For the time being all desktops free. At some point this might change. Therefore, we require users who want more powerful VDIs to send in an application, in which they provide financial information. Users will be notified about change in price.

VDI Workstations

Our infrastructure can also provide desktops running Windows or Linux operating systems with 10+ CPUS, 128GBytes+ RAM, and 4GBytes+ VRAM.

Linux desktops

There are also several Linux desktop available. For courses and other uses.
