Security update for many Mac computers

As part of strengthening IT security at UiO, the IT Department will this week install Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on many Macs. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is a modern security tool that better protects us against malware, phishing and digital threats.

All Windows computers have for some time had Microsoft Defender for Endpoint installed, and many Macs have had the solution installed as part of a pilot. It is therefore the Macs that do not already have Microsoft Defender for Endpoint installed that will now receive it.

What does this mean for you as a Mac user?

  • No action required: The installation takes place automatically in the background. You do not need to do anything at all.
  • No downtime: You can continue working as normal while the installation is in progress. You should not need to restart your computer.
  • New icon: You may notice a new shield icon in the taskbar (Windows) or in the menu bar (Mac).
  • Privacy: The program only monitors security-related events on the computer to stop cyber attacks. It does not track your private files or personal activity.

When will this happen? The installation starts on Monday 2 November and will take place gradually during the week.

If you experience unusual error messages or anything else you want to report, please contact IT Help, UiO's central IT support.
