How to apply for housing

Important information for international students arriving in 2024

The number of available student housing units in Oslo is limited. Incoming exchange students and international master students will be on UiOs prioritised housing list, given they apply for single housing within the deadline.

You are only prioritised for housing once. You are prioritised for housing if your housing contract begins 1 January / 1 August. It is not possible to terminate your contract or decline the offer, and then be prioritised for housing again.

Step 1: Application process and deadlines

Application deadline

  • 1 June for students starting their studies in the autumn semester.
  • 1 November for students starting their studies in the spring semester.

If you miss the deadline, you are not prioritised for student housing. We still recommend applying as soon as possible.

How to fill in the application

  1. Create a user and select the option "international student".
  2. It is important to use the same email address that you used when applying to studies in Søknadsweb.
  3. You must write all your first names (prénom) and family/surnames (nom de famille) exactly as stated in your Letter of admission in the "Personalia" section. If you apply for housing before you are issued an admission letter, please use the name that is written in your passport.
  4. Fill in your date of birth by using the European date format (Day/Month//Year)
  5. Choose the housing units and prioritise them. You are only prioritised for single housing units.
    • If the room you want is not available when you apply, choose the room anyway. It may be available when you arrive.
  6. Fill in these arrival dates - in order to be prioritised housing:
    • 1 August (autumn semester) or
    • 1 January* (spring semester)
  7. You must select "Yes" when asked: "Do you want an offer from us if we find available housing that is similar to the ones you have applied for?".
  8. Select  "University of Oslo" as the "Study place".

* Please be aware that even though the housing contract starts 1 January, you will only be able to move into your student housing the first day after a public holiday and/or weekend. 1 January is a public holiday in Norway.

If you plan to arrive after the Orientation Week, please notify SiO housing of your arrival date.

Apply through SiO's web page

You apply for housing online through SiO's web page.

Submit your housing application

Adapted housing and special needs provisions

  • If you require adapted housing you must select this during the housing application.
  • If you require special needs provisions, i.e. due to physical disability or visual impairment, please notify SiO Housing,  by using their online contact form.

Step 2: Accept your offer and sign the tenancy contract

You can expect to receive an answer to your housing application by the end of November/June.

  • The offer of housing will include a general tenancy contract in a student village.
  • Tenancy contracts are as a rule issued for entire semesters.
  • Tenancy contracts will be sent to your SiO MyPage.
  • Always accept your offer from SiO. If the rooms you have chosen are unavailable, SiO will assign you to a room in a student village where there are available rooms.
  • You are only prioritised for housing once. If you decline the housing offer, you will no longer be on UiOs housing priority list and will be on SiOs regular waiting list for housing.
  • Please note that if you have accepted a housing offer and choose not to come, you must notify SiO housing and cancel your housing contract. Please note that there may be a cancellation fee.

Step 3: Moving in

  • Please contact the SiO Customer Service Centre for information about how to collect your key.
  • From the starting day of your contract, you have 14 days to collect your key to avoid cancellation of the room. Students arriving after this date, must contact SiO.
  • It is not until you collect the housing keys that you will know the specific room and the exact price of your monthly rent.
  • Please note that if you have accepted a housing offer and choose not to come, you must notify SiO housing and cancel your housing contract. Failure to do so may result in a fee.

Giving notice

  • If you wish to terminate your tenancy contract, please note that there is a 2 or 3 months notice period depending on your type of accommodation.
  • From 15 July to 15 August SiO may shorten the notice period for accommodation with 2 months notice period. Please contact SiO directly for further information
