Study the historical interplay between tradition and modernity in East Asian cultures. Develop expertise in your area of focus, be it China, Japan, Korea, or Tibet, and assume a comparative East Asian perspective.

The historical interplay between tradition and modernity in East Asian cultures is the focus of this programme option. You specialize in either China, Japan, or Korea, but are encouraged to assume a comparative East Asian perspective. You will develop your studies on the basis of original sources in one or more of the region’s languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan.

In your master project you will conduct an in-depth study on the topic of your choice in close cooperation with internationally recognised scholars in a wide range of fields. You focus on historical or cultural phenomena in your area of specialization or compare across East Asia. Textual studies or fieldwork will be the basis for your research work, and theoretical perspectives from a wide array of fields may be applied in your project.

In addition to lectures and seminars, the program offers workshops such as the ”Academic Survival Kit” and ”How to Start Your China Career”. These are aimed at helping you find your way into professional life. There is also ample opportunity to spend parts of the your master abroad.
