Credit transfer of foreign education

If you have foreign higher education, you may apply for credit transfer. If you have studied abroad as an exchange student on one of UiO's agreements, you must apply for credit transfer upon return to UiO.

The degree requirements are determined by your study programme. You can find the requirements under “Programme structure" on the programme page.

Your study programme can advise you on which courses abroad that may be transferred back to UiO. You can find contact information under “Contact us” on the programme page.

Deadline

In most programmes the applications are processed as they are received. Some programmes have specific deadlines. You can find them under “Admission” on the programme page.

Processing time

In most cases, you will receive a reply within one month. If an academic assessment of your application is required, the processing may take up to four months.

You will receive the result by letter or email.

Faculty of Educational Sciences

Final approval of student exchange periods

You apply for final approval after returning from your student exchange period. Such approval is also necessary for you to convert parts of your educational loan to a grant, and for having the credits you have earned abroad recognized as part of your degree at the University of Oslo.

  • Applications concerning compulsory courses: courses that you have taken abroad are assessed in comparison to specified courses at UiO. This is often done in cases where one depends on obtaining exemption from course groups that are compulsory for a degree. This will often be the case for the exchange programmes (such as ERASMUS and NORDPLUS).
  • Applications concerning elective courses: courses that you have taken abroad are approved as unspecified credits. In these cases, the courses taken abroad will often have no equivalent at UiO. Assessments of applications will nevertheless consider any potential overlap with courses that you already have taken at UiO, or that would be a natural component in the course of your study programme. In a degree, unspecified credits are equivalent to other credits, but do not constitute grounds for exemption from compulsory courses in your degree.

Note! If you take courses on a later occasion, for example in another institute or another faculty at UiO, and these overlap with the courses that you took during your exchange period, this may cause your number of unspecified credits to be reduced.

Delivery/submission

If you have taken all or part of your education abroad, you can apply for recognition of your foreign education.

Send the application (free form) to the Faculty of Educational Sciences or delivered at the UV Student Information Centre.

Faculty of Humanities

Final approval of student exchange periods

You need to apply for final approval because:

  • Your studies abroad must be formally recognized for your study programme to permit the foreign education to appear on your diploma when you graduate from UiO.
  • The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund is notified about your progress, so that loans can be converted to grants.

Recognition of other foreign education

If you have taken courses at the master’s level abroad and wish to have them recognized for your Norwegian degree, such courses must also be approved by the faculty.

To obtain such recognition or a final approval of parts of a programme of study taken abroad at the bachelor’s or master’s level, you must fill in and submit the form below. Append required documentation of the studies you have completed abroad.

Required documents

You must attach documentation of the studies you have completed abroad to your application.

If you wish to achieve recognition of a course or courses that will replace elective courses in your degree, an original transcript that shows the length of your studies and your grades will normally suffice.

If you wish that a course or courses taken abroad should replace compulsory parts of your studies, you should attach reading lists, overviews of lectures and – if available – submitted written assignments that show the actual content of your studies.

Delivery/submission

Deliver or send the form and the attached documentation to the Faculty of Humanities, PO Box 1079 Blindern, 0316 Oslo.

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Final approval of student exchange periods

When you return from your exchange period abroad, it is crucial that we receive the necessary documentation to have your education registered at UiO. This is necessary in order to include the courses you have taken in your degree at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and for converting parts of your educational loan to a grant.

If you have taken courses instead of or in addition to those for which prior recognition has been granted, these must be assessed in the same way as those courses that have been granted prior recognition. If all courses have been granted prior recognition we only need a transcript of your grades. Bear in mind that this must be the original or a certified copy. From the USA, the transcript must be sent directly from the educational institution to the MN International Office.

Faculty of Medicine

If you have studied at other educational institutions, but want to complete your education or take a new degree at the University of Oslo you can apply for an academic assessment of your previous education.

An approval will not be granted until the student has been admitted to the programme of studies. This applies to all programmes of study at the Faculty, except for nutrition, which assess external education in connection with supplementary admission (local admission) to higher study levels.

See exemption, advancement and introductory courses for the programme in medicine.

The programmes of study have different structures. This means that external education that does not match the level and the programme's academic requirements cannot necessarily be fully incorporated into a degree at the Faculty of Medicine.
