Academic interests

Computational analysis of groove-based rhythm in Afro-diasporic music such as funk, soul, reggae, samba and hip-hop. I work on the signal-processing side of music information retrieval, including source separation, onset and microtiming estimation, and machine-learning classification of rhythmic patterns. A recurring question in my work is how much of a groove lives in the pattern itself and how much lives in the small timing deviations around it. I also care about reproducible research software and release my pipelines as open-source tools.

Background

I joined the RITMO Centre and the Department of Musicology in September 2026 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the GROOVE project, where I lead the computational work package.

I hold a PhD in audio signal processing from KU Leuven (2021-2025), on distributed signal estimation in ad-hoc wireless microphone networks, carried out at STADIUS (ESAT) as part of the Horizon 2020 SOUNDS European Training Network and including a ten-month stay at the University of Oldenburg and Fraunhofer IDMT. Before that I worked on reverberation room design optimization with KU Leuven and ROCKWOOL International, supporting the ISO 354 revision.

I have an MSc in Engineering Acoustics from DTU and an engineering degree from Mines Nancy. I have taught acoustics and signal-processing courses at both DTU and KU Leuven and supervised two MSc theses. Outside the lab I compose and DJ, which is a good part of why groove research appealed to me.
