Audience Measurement Pilot

To support the analysis of audience motion across the Bodies in Concert experiments, a pilot session was conducted to assess the sensitivities of different systems of measurement, including body-worn accelerometers and infrared and thermal video recordings.

Five frames of video of the same scene, a row of people sitting, through different video devices that show them to varying degrees of clarity in a dark room, plus one frame of accelerometer measurements showing body motion over time from each of the participants.

Parallel measurements of audience bodies and movements during the Audience Motion Pilot

A test session was set up in a small performance space to test how different technologies compaire in their measurement of audience motions typical for classical music audiences.

A small number of volunteers wore accelerometers on their torsos and were recorded with two thermal cameras, an infrared camera (with illuminating lamp) and normal RGB in a room set to a darkness typical for concert halls (<10 lumens). They sat and watched a recording of a symphonic piece from a previous concert experiment, clapping with the recorded audience and attending to the performance between.

Analysis of these measurements will be reported at SMC 2026.
