KIN4011 – History/History of Ideas 1
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
The course is based on the reading of sources both in classical and modern Chinese and centres around a methodological approach to the study of Chinese history and/or history of ideas. The course is constructed around a certain theme and involves the reading of original texts, secondary literature in Chinese and in other languages, as well as discussions about the methodological use of these sources. Subjects within both history and history of ideas will be covered
The student will acquire a high level of competence in the Chinese language and sufficient reading knowledge to be able to read and use Chinese primary sources in the study of Chinese history/history of ideas. The student will also be trained in critical use of relevant secondary sources both in Chinese and in other languages as well as the use of relevant reference literature. In addition the choice of theme will acquaint the student especially well with certain aspects of Chinese history/history of ideas. Further, the student will learn to prepare annotated translations of Chinese texts and/or summaries of the argumentation in academic texts.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
An 80-group in Chinese language at BA level with a grade of at least C in Chinese 3+4 (KIN2110), alternatively Chinese major subject with a mark of at least 2.7. Students from other educational institutions may apply provided that they have attained a BA degree or equivalent with the main weight on Chinese language and culture. Students who do not have an 80-group in Chinese may also apply on condition that they can document sufficient knowledge of Chinese and that they have a BA degree with in-depth specialisation in relevant subjects within history or history of ideas.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes basic insight into Chinese history and history of ideas corresponding to KIN1502 and KIN1503 as well as basic Chinese language skills corresponding to KIN2110.
Teaching is in the form of seminars and requires active participation and the handing in of compulsory assignments. Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
The course evaluation is in two parts, one written and one oral. The written paper consists of annotated translation and/or summarising. The oral consists of an oral presentation and participation during teaching. The written part is an essay and should be up to 10 pages, 2300 characters per page, plus bibliography.
The written and the oral part each carry 50% of the final grade.
Students must obtain passing grades in both the oral and the written part to pass the course.
