FLER4110 – Introduction to Statistical Analysis for Language Students
This course introduces students to fundamentals of statistical analysis of data collected in linguistic, psycholinguistic, and psychological methods. A variety of exploratory data analysis techniques, such as descriptive statistics and basic data visualization, as well as statistical inference methods, such as comparing two or more means for dependent and independent groups, correlation, regression, chi-square test, will be covered. The focus of the course is understanding fundamental concepts in statistical analysis. The concepts and methods learned in this course are expected to serve as solid building blocks for more advanced statistical courses.
Students will learn how to:
• understand fundamentals of statistical analysis
• formulate testable hypotheses
• choose appropriate statistical tests for testing these hypotheses
• prepare data for analysis
• visualise data
• run most frequently used tests
• interpret and report basic statistical results
• critically evaluate statistical results from published papers

Recommended previous knowledge
No specific prerequisites. If students decide to use R, they are expected to bring their laptops to classes for doing exercises and make sure that they have current versions of R and R-Studio on their laptops. SPSS is installed on university computers.
10 credits overlap with FLER2110 – Introduction to Statistical Analysis for Language Students
2-hour classes for 14 weeks. One hour of each class will be devoted to theory and the second hour will be devoted to practical exercises with a computer. One assignment will be offered every week. 11 assignments out of 14 (around 80%) will be needed to be completed and approved in order to be eligible to take the final exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
