IBS4200 – Digital approaches to Ibsen Studies

Course content

This course will introduce you to selected digital approaches that are used and being developed in Ibsen Studies. The Centre for Ibsen Studies is a world-leading institution in developing digital methods for research in the Humanities. We look at a wide range of methods in the course of a semester, including text interrogation, mapping, network analysis, and using virtual reality technology in theatre research.

Learning outcome

  • To have a basic understanding of the common digital methods used in Ibsen Studies and Humanities in general;
  • To be able to analyze, assess and critique others’ use of digital methods in humanities research;
  • To be able to apply the different digital methods in one’s own research projects;  

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent qualification.

Recommended previous knowledge

A fundamental knowledge of Ibsen’s works and their adaptations in other media.

Teaching

This course consists of 14 units, a total of 28 hours, lasting for one semester. The form of teaching combines intensive lecture / seminar teaching, workshops, and class activities. Additional lab and group activities are to be expected as part of the coursework.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Examination support material

Each student must submit three to four reports (15 pages in total) during the course. Revisions of these reports are then submitted in a portfolio as the final exam. In other words, this course has portfolio exam as the form of its final exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
