Multiliteracies and multimodal communication

This course examines multilingualism through the lens of textual and visual modes of communication, with a focus on the changing literacy practices of today’s communication and media landscape. We will examine the social significance of literacy practices, exploring how such practices have varied over time, and across cultural and linguistic groups. Key topics include (bi)literacy in education, standardization processes, multimodal communication on and off-line, digital literacies, and health literacies in multilingual contexts. Students will develop theoretical and methodological tools for the analysis of multilingualism in textual, visual and embodied modes.
