NORAM2572 – American Women's History
Course description
Course content
This seminar course examines the history of women and gender in the United States, beginning with the colonial era and continuing into the present. Weekly seminars will examine women’s experiences chronologically and topically. Among the historical issues considered will be: attitudes about femininity and masculinity, sexuality, fertility, work, sex and marriage. Hands-on analysis of primary source documents will be a central part of this course.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- Gained an understanding of how women’s experiences have changed over time;
- Gained an understanding of history as an interpretation of primary documents and sources;
- Developed abilities in critical thinking and communication.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the course is required.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English. Although the course can be taken as a first course, we recommend at least ten credits in a a relevant subject. NORAM1500 – American history (discontinued) is particularly useful and highly recommended.

This course overlaps with NORAM4572 – American Women's History (discontinued).
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in total.
Attendance is obligatory at least 11 out of 14 seminars. Additional absences must be justified by documentation given to the exam administrator.
Students will write two short essays (a total of 5 standard pages, 11.500 bytes) at an appointed time. The essays must be approved by the tutor. Essays handed in after the set deadline will not be approved. If it is not approved, the student will be barred from taking the four-hour written exam.
Examination
The evaluation is based on a 4-hour written exam.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
